The title is fed by Dupree's song choices, which include the down 'n' dirty after hours numbers "Junker's Blues" and "Can't Kick the Habit," as well as the classic murder ballads "Stack-O-Lee" and "Frankie & Johnny." They're served well by Dupree's strong, declarative voice, but the heart of the music's literally in Dupree's hands.

The 50s saw Champion Jack emerge as one of the most influential piano Blues players on the scene. Artistic transmission from this man who learned his chops in the cat-houses of New Orleans and was now heard regularly on the radio and on record, could be felt in the work of Memphis Slim and Fats Domino .

Oct 21,  · This is an excellent record, probably the best from Champion Jack Dupree. I would hesitate to call it a pure blues record, since many of the tracks do not qualify as blues (e.g. Frankie & Johnny, Stack O Lee) but the mixture is well chosen. His version of "TB Blues" is the best I have heard since Big Joe Williams/5(10).
